If i stay is the tragic story of Mia, a 17-year-old cellist. One day she meets a boy named Adam, who plays punk-rock guitar in a band called Shooting Star, the polar opposite of her quiet cello. She sees him playing his guitar every day at school and slowly starts to fall in love with him. Adam, who is amazed at how well Mia plays the cello, starts to fall for her too. When they start dating Adam tries to understand her love of cello while Mia does the same with guitar, and tied together by music they build a relationship. Mia is happy, and everything is normal for a while. Until one day when it’s snowing, Mia’s family decides to go visit some friends. On the road, a truck comes towards them fast, and their car slips on the snow, straight into the path of the truck. Mia wakes up later apart from her body. She can see and hear everything that is going on around her, but no one else can see or hear her, because her actual body is in a coma. The “spirit” Mia wakes up to see her parents dead, and her little brother, Teddy, is not there. Paramedics are surrounding her own damaged body. She follows them to the hospital and while family and friends come visit, Mia is unable to do anything except watch them. Everyone tells her she can choose now whether she is going to stay or go–live or die. Mia doesn’t want to hurt her friends and family (and Adam) any more by choosing to go, but she also doesn’t want to stay and have no parents. Finally, at the very end of the book, out-of-body Mia makes her choice. I really liked if i stay even though it was extremely emotional and sad. There is also a movie coming out based on the book, so you should probably read it before you see the movie. The book flashes between Mia at the hospital to times in her life that she is reflecting back on, and I liked that part about the book. It is a really great story, but only appropriate for ages 13 and up.
