The Last Present is the fourth and final book in the Willow Falls series, and it definitely made me feel satisfied with not only the book but the whole series. All the other books in the series were good but kind of confusing when it came to Angelina DuPrau, the magic woman in 11 Birthdays, Finally, and 13 Gifts. But in The Last Present, everything is cleared up. In 11 Birthdays, the “gift” Angelina DuPrau gives to Amanda and Leo is friendship once again after a year of the silent treatment from each other; in Finally, the gift she gives to Rory is the reminder that you can’t (and often won’t) get everything you want; and the “gift” she gives Tara in 13 Gifts is a group of new friends and self-confidence. And so that is why it is called The Last Present: because Angelina is giving one final gift. This time, Amanda from 11 Birthdays is narrating again. In this book, a little girl named Grace has fallen into a comma. This is because Angelina usually casts a protective spell over a baby when he/she is born in Willow Falls, but Grace’s brother accidentally caused Angelina to mess up the spell on Grace, and so Grace was unprotected and fell into a comma. Amanda and Leo have to go back in time to every one of Grace’s past birthday parties and try to release Angelina’s protection spell onto Grace. Then something happens (I won’t ruin what it is) that reveals many truths and one hard choice. But after some confusion, the book wraps up well and will leave you feeling satisfied. The Last Present is for ages 9-12, and if you are in this age group I really suggest this gripping book.
